The Nutrients You Can’t Out-Train: Why Micronutrients Matter
You track your protein. You count your carbs. You probably have a pretty good handle on calories in versus calories out. But there’s a category of nutrition that quietly determines whether all that hard work in the gym actually pays off, and most people never think about it until something feels off.
That category is micronutrients: the vitamins and minerals your body needs in small amounts but can’t function without.
Small Amounts, Big Job
Unlike protein, carbs, and fat (the macronutrients that give you energy), micronutrients don’t provide calories. Instead, they act as the behind-the-scenes crew that makes everything else work. They turn the food you eat into usable energy, repair muscle tissue, and keep your immune system and hormones running smoothly.
Here’s why that matters specifically for someone training regularly:
Energy production. B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) are essential cofactors in converting carbs and fat into ATP, the energy your muscles actually burn. Low B vitamin status can leave you feeling sluggish no matter how well you’re eating overall.
Muscle recovery and repair. Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and protein synthesis. Zinc plays a direct role in tissue repair. Vitamin C is needed to build collagen, the connective tissue that keeps joints and tendons resilient under load.

The Deficiencies We See Most in Active Clients
Even people eating “healthy” can run low on:
- Vitamin D, especially with limited sun exposure or darker skin tones
- Iron, common in women, endurance athletes, and those eating little red meat
- Magnesium, often depleted through sweat and stress
- B12, a concern for anyone eating plant-based diets
You often won’t feel a deficiency directly. Instead, it shows up as unexplained fatigue, slower recovery, more frequent colds, or a plateau you can’t quite explain.
Building a Solid Foundation
You don’t need to overhaul your diet overnight, but a few practical habits go a long way:
- Eat the colors. Different colored fruits and vegetables carry different micronutrient profiles. Variety is the easiest insurance policy.
- Don’t fear whole food fats and animal proteins. Eggs, dairy, and meat are dense sources of B12, zinc, and iron that are harder to get elsewhere.
- Get outside. Ten to twenty minutes of midday sun supports vitamin D production.
